In New England, the whale watching season typically takes place from about mid-spring through October, depending both on weather and precise location. It is here that the humpback whale, fin whale, minke whale, and the very endangered, heavily protected North Atlantic right whale are often observed. Recently, a few orca whales, too!

Whale watching boats sail from two locations on Cape Cod: Barnstable Harbor, and Provincetown. Most of the whales are concentrated off of Provincetown on “Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary” where they feed. Many times, curious whales will come alongside or even under the boat, for amazing photo opportunities.

PRO TIP: Bring a warm coat or sweatshirt, as it can get cool out on the water, especially when the boat gets moving at 30 knots as it heads out to Stellwagen Bank , east of Provincetown. It’s a one hour ride up there from Barnstable Harbor.

Watch as a whale spouts, then dives, showing off his tail to the delight of all!
