Nantucket
Nantucket is nearly 15 miles long and 3 to 6 miles wide. It is of glacial origin and has wide, sandy beaches, a commodious harbor, and a moderate climate. Wampanoag Indians inhabited Nantucket when it was visited in 1602 by the English navigator Bartholomew Gosnold. Over 800 pre-Civil War-era buildings still stand in Nantucket town. There are virtually no fenced-off beaches; most of the 82 miles of its coastline are open to the public. Its dining and shopping offerings will impress even the most jaded urbanites. The late April Daffodil Festival draws crowds to see the antique car parade, the Daffy Hat Contest, and the Children’s Parade.
